The Provincial Command of the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) in the Beni territory opposes the Virunga National Park deforestation campaign recently launched by the Federalist Christian Democracy (DCF), a political party established In the region.
According to the ICCN, Mr KiZerbo Kasereka, an executive from the DCF, had recommended the population to deforest part of the Virunga National Park to allow
FARDC to anticipate potential movements of ADFs in the region. Following this call, some of Beni inhabitants had started the land clearing of part of the park in the east of the city. In a statement, the ICCN has denounced a campaign that disregards the environment and any military strategy. The Provincial Directorate has promised to use all means at its disposal to fight against this action.
