On July 15th, 2017, Tenke Fungurume Mining S.A. (TFM), located in the Lualaba Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, experienced an electrical short in a single transformer that supplies the SAG Mill at the Kwatebala plant, resulting in a localized fire, which was quickly extinguished. The event occurred shortly after a normal plant start up, which followed a routine maintenance shutdown.
Two TFM employees suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident and they received swift and appropriate medical care. Safety is a core value of TFM and CMOC International, accordingly TFM has taken proactive steps to address the problem including shutting off power to that portion of the operation in order to verify the reliability of the electrical feed and electrical connections, and to ensure safe operation of the mine and all facilities. TFM and CMOC International remain dedicated to operating safely and efficiently, and anticipate that normal operations will resume shortly.
TFM does not anticipate that this incident will have a material impact on TFM copper or cobalt production for the quarter or the year.
