Congo Cobalt Miner GTL Halts Smelter After Feedstock Dispute

GTL, a miner that produces about 4 percent of the world’s cobalt, halted its smelter in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a director of one of the joint-venture partners said. The furnace that processes mine waste in the southeastern Congolese mining town of Lubumbashi was closed on Aug. 12, Groupe Forrest International Chief Executive Officer Malta Forrest said in a phone interview Monday. He declined to comment on when operations might resume.

TFM, Transformer Fire

On July 15th, 2017, Tenke Fungurume Mining S.A. (TFM), located in the Lualaba Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, experienced an electrical short in a single transformer that supplies the SAG Mill at the Kwatebala plant, resulting in a localized fire, which was quickly extinguished. The event occurred shortly after a normal plant start up, which followed a routine maintenance shutdown.
